Aluminum, due to its grain structure, will tend to tear when being polished or buffed. As a result, aluminum requires more frequent applications of greasestick when polishing and a greasier than usual buffing compound. The tearing effect is visible after buffing and is referred to as drag lines due to its appearance. These elongations are due to impurities imbedded in the aluminum, which are “dragged” into the buffing action.
Special abrasives and grease combinations have been developed by JacksonLea for buffing aluminum castings and extrusions. These products can help eliminate the drag lines and produce the desired finish while eliminating the “blush” that can occur during the anodizing of improperly buffed extrusions.
